Poise

As a matter of pride
She kept a royal stride
Esteemed Princess Doe’s poise was her proudest feature

Refined since youth
And practiced in truth
When Esteemed Prince Doe stood and walked, others were meeker

However,

Rumours began to tell
Of a small rural gal
Who possessed a posture and stride of legend

Little Nicole was she
Modest as anything
Positively bewildered she’s even being mentioned

When the princess heard this
She pooh-poohed it with bliss
“Bring me the girl; I’ll give her a lesson in poise.”

Little Nicole was called
She arrived nervous and small
Esteemed Princess Doe was unimpressed with joy

Esteemed Princess Doe
Casually wanted to know
About little Nicole who possessed famed elegance

Little Nicole replied meekly
And answered discreetly
As if she were a bug among angry elephants

Unimpressed Doe
Said “On with the show”
And little Nicole demonstrated her gift

Esteemed Princess Doe
Was shocked and it showed
This girl was everything and more than suggested

With Little Nicole
So poise apropos
Esteemed Princess Doe would never have guessed it

Absolutely amazed
Soon thereafter crazed
Esteemed Princess Doe set to testing her own presence

A book and then two
Balance a ball topped by a shoe
Esteemed princess Doe’s royal poise was truly grand

But little Nicole
With a certain, I don’t know;
“Straight back, chin up, eyes forward” could balance a musical band!

Esteemed Princess Doe
With scrutiny and hope
Showered little Nicole with a thousand questions

Little Nicole shrugged
As the princess plugged
Nicole’s answers were her best ones

After day and night
Grueling work and insight
Esteemed Princess Doe could not compete with naturally gifted Nicole

The crushed Miss Doe
Was sad and it showed
Little Nicole, the sullen princess she tried to console

“Please don’t be upset
Poise isn’t all of it
You’re esteemed, a princess, and you needn’t faultier”

“So what if I have this
We shouldn’t be so serious
Besides which, between us two, you are best at being taller.”
